Rehabilitation services for disabled people in Bangladesh are patchy and there is no national institution giving formal training in prosthetics or orthotics. Meanwhile, the need for such services is growing as road traffic and industrial accidents increase in this rapidly developing country. Improved health awareness also leads to higher quality of life expectations, as people learn, for example, that children with cerebral palsy or who have had polio can benefit hugely from rehabilitation therapy and simple appliances.

DDP has completed a 5 year partnership with BRAC – Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee by supporting the development and establishment of BRAC’s first disability and rehabilitation project based round a new limb and brace fitting centre (BLBC) in the capital city, Dhaka – to help adults and children who had lost limb (s) or the use of limb (s) through accidents and diseases. BLBC uses the Jaipur foot technology and the first batch of technicians were trained at the artificial limb centre at Santokba Durlabhji Memorial Hospital in Jaipur.

In BLBC’s third year of operation BRAC decided to expand by setting up 3 satellite centres – in Rangpur, Sylhet and Chittagong - providing basic services and referring people to BLBC in Dhaka for more complex treatments. BLBC has also benefited from DDP’s Partners Training Programme and technical support from Mobility India and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Sustainability and cost-recovery are vital to the long term continuation of BLBC – as for all BRAC programmes – and are being achieved through a variety of strategies, including individual sponsorship of poor beneficiaries by wealthy clients and developing other income generating services such as physiotherapy.

More than 3,000 people have received artificial limbs and braces from BLBC and there are over 400 paying physiotherapy clients on the books. A system of follow up visits for clients is in place either at their own homes or at the centre. BLBC staff also provide general advice and links to other BRAC development programmes - for credit and loans or job opportunities – aimed especially at people who have lost livelihoods as a result of their disability.

This programme has ambitious long-term goals: BLBC is the first step. For more information visit www.brac.net
