In a first-ever UK visit for DDP’s Angolan partners LARDEF we welcomed Carla Luis, LARDEF’s national co-ordinator for women, children and youth, for an intensive week-long programme in September 2007. Carla came to contribute to a DDP project assessment meeting with a donor, Comic Relief, but her visit enabled DDP to arrange a full programme of events for funders, friends and supporters. These included well-attended receptions hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Angola and the Mayor of London’s office; media interviews and DDP’s AGM.

The Mayor of London’s disability adviser who organised the event invited a number of London based UK DPOs to meet Carla and hear about the situation of disabled people in Angola and about LARDEF’s work.

It was a good networking and sharing opportunity. The visit was a chance for both Carla and DDP staff, trustees and volunteers to gain a deeper mutual appreciation of our partnership and the different but complementary work of both organisations.

Carla also found time to enjoy the sights of London – including a night flight on the London Eye, a very enjoyable evening at the Lion King and of course, shopping!

As an independent wheelchair-user, Carla appreciated London’s relatively accessible public transport, especially after a completely unwarranted struggle to be allowed on her flight for the long journey from Angola to the UK.

Her visit also prompted some local changes, for example, the Angolan Embassy acquired a much-needed ramp.
