Dignidade (2002-2007)
A poverty reduction and capacity building programme with LARDEF

LARDEF - the Benguela autorickshaw taxi co-op
This income-generating taxi co-operative using three wheeler auto-rickshaws from India started in 2002 and it was DDP’s first partnership with LARDEF and the first project in Angola. It developed into a series of taxi co-operatives run by disabled people benefiting entire communities. The 3 original co-operatives on the outskirts of Luanda have now amalgamated into one in Viana, a Luanda suburb and one in the city of Benguela, providing jobs and income for some 40 people and their families.

Co-operative members were trained in business, mechanics and driving skills. Dignidade members can now support their families, send children to school and even save a little to help extended family and friends. To address the growing problem of breakdowns and of keeping adequate supplies of spare parts to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Dignidade co-operatives, a Dignidade Spares and Repairs workshop was set up in the main Dignidade compound in Viana. The shop was formally inaugurated in December 2007, Dignidade co-operative’s vehicles are now being repaired and maintained. DDP’s active involvement in this project has now ended.
