| Disabled children have the right to quality education |

We know that education will not be effective for disabled children if they do not have the rehabilitation services to enable them to get to school in the first place and to participate fully when they are there. All the disabled children identified through ELO have been assessed by a specialist team from MI in Bangalore; an individual rehabilitation plan has been drawn up for each of them which is implemented by experts such as orthotists and rehabilitation therapists. Children with mobility impairments need aids and appliances and they may also need corrective surgery and other specialist help and where it is not possible for MI to cater for a child’s need (for example speech impaired or deaf children) they are referred to an appropriate agency or specialists for help. Wherever the team was able to intervene with practical rehabilitation the results are life changing for children. Read BBC Appeal page and Shilpa’s story>>
ELO’s third element is helping to provide secure livelihoods for disabled children’s parents and disabled citizens. ELO has supported them to form self help groups and then to start savings and loans schemes while providing resources for activities to generate sustainable incomes. These groups are also vehicles for people collectively to demand the benefits to which they are entitled. This is crucial as children are often withdrawn from school in order to contribute to the family income.
The ELO District Rehabilitation Centre and Services
Despite the rehabilitation interventions by Mobility India’s mobile team for children already identified through ELO, the reality for many disabled children and adults who live in the rest of the District is great unmet need. To address this we have started the development and establishment of a District Rehabilitation Centre and Services to have the capacity to cater for all disabled people in Chamrajnagar District. <<back |
