| Tchilema means 'Disability' in Tchokue, the vernacular language spoken in Moxico. Focused in Moxico and Huambo provinces, the main aims of this programme are |
- to reduce poverty among the disabled people through income generating projects
- provide mine risk education to disabled people
LARDEF’s on-going bedrock activities such as Membership Mobilisation, Advocacy, Lobbying and Awareness Raising support the implementation of this programme, which started in Moxico, one of the most war-affected provinces of Angola, with a population of thousands of disabled people, mostly victims of ordnance and landmines, who lived through the last frontier of the armed conflict (which ended in Luena in 2002) resulting in deep-rooted mistrust of outsiders.
LARDEF is working in Sangondo and Zorrô on the outskirts of the capital Luena, which are part of the 14 ex-camps of war-displaced refugees, which have been up-graded to 'districts'. There is a high level of illiteracy and unemployment in the area, lack of basic resources as well as lack of socio-economic initiatives whether government or privately supported continue.
In 2007 Tchilema’s activities were extended to Huambo province also badly affected by the war, where LARDEF set-up an office in the city of Huambo. They are working in Casseque 3 and Luondimbale, 15 kms and 100 kms from the city respectively.
LARDEF has started a Mine Risk Education programme for disabled people in Moxico and Huambo. These trained people will be responsible for spreading mine risk awareness in their respective districts.
The Tchilema programme is contributing to the expansion of LARDEF’s construction block making enterprise based in Benfica where they will have workshop spaces for rent. The income forecast from these activities will be significant for LARDEF in terms of organisational and future financial sustainability. |
