Timbaktu Collective
Anantapur District, Andhra Pradesh, India
Since 2001, the Timbaktu Collective (TC) has been working in three mandals (administrative areas) of Anantapur District in Andhra Pradesh state. Since 1990, TC’s focus has been on responding to the needs of the residents of over 100 villages in this drought-prone district. Severe droughts have rendered much of the land unproductive and this, in turn, has resulted in high unemployment levels and extreme poverty. TC’s responses have included the establishment of autonomous thrift co-operatives, women’s self help groups, education and resource management among the landless and small or marginal farmers.

It soon became apparent that these climatological and environmental problems impact most profoundly upon those least able to protect themselves and particularly on disabled girls and boys and adults. This is compounded by negative social and cultural attitudes to disability, which often lead to low self-esteem among disabled people. It is also the case that no other organisation is working with disabled people in these three mandals.

Currently, DDP’s are partnering the Timbaktu Collective in the 3 year Milita project to reach disabled people in 144 villages. Disabled people will form self help groups to advocate for their rights and for better services, and achieve economic independence through savings and credit.
